Life holds me. When I look at life, it looks back. Two hearts, gazing. Beguiled and enchanted. Life holds me.
It’s not always easy to trust life—to trust its goodness and feel confident in its support. For some, that trust is broken and can take a lifetime to repair. Everyday, our modern world crashes in on our natural relationship with life, clamouring for attention. Pain, conflict and trauma bleed pain into our ability to connect and listen deeply.
The fabric of life is profoundly resilient, but vulnerable to tearing. Threads get snagged, stitches are dropped, and the fibres that weave us into trust fray and tangle.
But life is ever-present, steadfast and generous. Faith is believing that, holding it as true and meaningful. Trust is feeling it. And trusting life doesn’t happen naturally. It can’t thrive without our attention and care.
The Earth magic of this time of year (winter in the northern hemisphere) offers a supportive opportunity to give ourselves that attention and care. When darkness blooms and life—real life, not the hubbub of modern society—grows quiet and still under a touch of cold and a blanket of snow, we can travel our roots to deeper truths. We can tend to the generous abiding presence of life and find renewal, guidance, and gratitude. We can remember and be remembered. And in that practice, we can nurture trust.
Creative/Intuitive Prompts:
Join together with your friends and family and craft gentle experiences of deliberate rest and slowness. There is great power in resting in community. (Rest Gatherings are great for this too!)
Write a letter (poem, song etc) from life to you. What does life see when it looks at you?
Collect three candles, as well as any tools you may need to reflect, and set an intention to nurture your trust in life. Light one of the candles and speak your doubts and struggles into the flame. When you are ready, use that candle to light another. Speak your gratitudes and joys into the second flame. Use both candles to light a third and, with gentle mindfulness, blow out the first two. Sit with the third flame and be open to whatever inspiration or guidance comes. Journal, draw, create or move what comes through your body. When you feel complete, close the ritual with gratitude.
How might a practice of rest guide and support you in trusting life more? What comes up when you sit with that question?
