Getting to Know Uncertainty
Have you ever tried doing something a little nutty or woo-woo in order to stay open and keep yourself in the flow when stress & worry start to crowd in? Well, you’re in the right place, because a little nutty and woo-woo is where I live.
Recently, I was guided to sit with uncertainty in a deeper way. At a depth that intimidated me. Sometimes I use this free-form creative exercise to maintain a friendly non-stressful connection: imagine the energy or quality as a person and get to know them.
Here is what emerged …
Uncertainty collects crow feathers and arranges them in tall glass vessels all over the apartment, like flowers. People know to bring vases or jars as gifts. When Uncertainty was born, xer body was identified as female, but that label kept sliding off and getting left behind somewhere. By the time xe was three years old, Uncertainty would tell anyone that would listen, “I’m not a girl or a boy. I am me.”
Xe is a deep and loyal friend, if you learn to let xer be xerself. Xe has dark black hair that xe wears in a tousled mass of curls and uneven layers, and eyes that don’t always stay the same colour—although they only ever shift between golden hazel and deep earthy browns. I asked xer once if her eyes changed colour with xer mood and xe just winked at me and giggled.
Xe does that a lot. Uncertainty doesn’t like to answer questions, at least not directly. Sometimes xe’ll reply with a question of xer own. Other times, she holds my gaze, takes slow deep breaths and smiles at me like xe’s looking at a sunset or a sleeping baby. They way xe looks at me … sometimes I think Uncertainty is in love with me. But then I remember, that’s they way xe is with everyone.
It’s not uncommon for Uncertainty to answer my questions days or months, or even years, later. Xe’ll just walk into the room and pick up the conversation. It can take a minute for me to realize what’s happening. I discovered a long time ago, living with Uncertainty means I have to stay grounded and present. Xe doesn’t intend to cause disorientation, but xer relationship with time is fractal. Xe explained it to me once. It’s like a kaleidoscope, apparently. I don’t really understand it, but I imagine it is beautiful.
Uncertainty has a tendency to go on rambling trips and sublet xer room without telling me. I’m never quite sure who I will find in the kitchen or ensconced in the living room. Xe also has a lot of friends. Whimsy is almost always here. Faith and Uncertainty are lovers that never breakup, but sometimes go long periods of time without seeing each other. Authenticity went in on a food box with us and we often swap recipes.
Xe’s had a series of jobs, but doesn’t settle. Uncertainty takes xer work seriously, but people tend to feel uncomfortable around xer. In xer core, Uncertainty is a textile artist. We had to get a bigger place to accommodate xer loom. Xe’ll often go long stretches without working, then focus on her creations with piercing attention. Xe generates fabrics of tangled colours and knotted textures that flow together and fold back on each other. Watching xer work, it’s hard to believe it will it will turn into anything worth looking at. Then, all of a sudden, it’s astounding. Xer creativity and generosity amaze me.
What energy in life do you need to become better friends with?
Do you have any wacky techniques you use to stay in the flow?
